The ErgonomicsThe ergonomics of the design are very good as long as you are 5’ 6” or taller. At a height of 5’ 6”, I adjust the stem as short as it will go. The control panel is very well arranged. The buttons are very easily pressed with the thumb of the hand holding the unit.The handle is at an angle that requires you to bend your wrist too much if you grip it with your fist, but you can grip it with your fingers extended somewhat, allowing your wrist to be nearly straight and comfortable. Because my forefinger was falling above the foam grip, I maneuvered the foam high enough that it compressed into the control unit. I could not figure out the purpose of the arm strap – I removed it.Coil Angle AdjustmentThe arrangement for adjusting the coil to shank angle does not provide enough friction to prevent the weight of the coil from tilting the front of the coil down as evidenced by others who have broken the plastic bolt that adjusts the friction.To solve the problem, I made a washer with three holes for the pegs like the rubber one, from a 0.016”” thick clear plastic yogurt container cover, and placed it behind one of the rubber washers. This solved the problem, but it is best to place one of the washers behind each of the two rubber washers. The added washer must be thin enough to allow the rubber washer to recess significantly into the cavity, and the stem with washers must slide easily into the coil ears.The Battery Cover.The battery cover of the control unit bumps into the shank cam lock as you attempt to slide it off. You can solve this problem by filing off about 1/16” off the pointy end of the battery cover.The AA Battery AdvantageA significant advantage of the Garrett metal detector design is that it uses four AA batteries instead of the two 9-volt batteries that many competitors use. The four AA batteries have an energy capacity that is about 64% greater than that of two 9-volt batteries. Furthermore, two 9-volt batteries typically cost 2.5 times the cost of the four AA cells.LoudnessIt is extremely loud, especially in the pinpointing mode. The headphones solve the loudness problem, but it is awkward dealing with the cable mess if you need to lay down the detector from time to time.The CableI added a mic stand cable clip to the stem to help in dressing the cable. I wanted the cable dressed close to the stem, but not so tight as to stress the strain relief at the coil.UseI located a “tungsten” ring with a target ID of 75. Tungsten has a relative conductivity of 30, and I expected a number smaller than 75 for the target ID. The ring was between two very close iron indications and a little difficult to capture. Iron masking might have been useful had I known the target ID would be 75.Great product, Great price!!!Good all around metal detector. And yes folks this is made in the USA!I upgraded to the Garret 300 and found the transition to be smooth. Pulls a little downward on the wrist but other than that it’s balanced and lightweight. Nice led display with numerical reference for the target. Volume is loud and is not able to be adjusted. Only way to adjust volume is when using the wired headphones that came with the detector. Until you “learn” the tones and numbers being displayed dig everything. You’ll find more trash than treasure, that’s not the detector’s fault. There are several modes for distinguishing types of targets you’re looking for. The unit is easy to operate, turn it in and go ! Great for beginners and experienced users without investing large amounts of money. Batteries come with it and after 18-20 hours the indicator is still reading “full”You won’t be disappointed in this detector. It’s easy to assemble and with moderate practice you’ll be retrieving treasure in no time. The picture is what i retrieved from a beach club in about three hours. She’s been out in the garden everyday since we’ve bought it so money well spent! we’re off to the beach next week to find some treasure apparently.
